1. Thou shalt treat cosplay as the art form that it is
2. Thou shalt be in character when in costume
3. Thou shalt attempt to create as much of their costume as possible
4. Thou shalt put effort into their creations
5. Thou shalt pass on the cosplay love to future generations
6. Thou shalt not be an elitist
7. Thou shalt respect different types of cosplayers
8. Thou shalt not confuse particular fashion types with cosplay
9. Thou shalt not confuse 'dressing up' with 'cosplay'
10. Thou shalt protect the name and reputation of cosplay
I've been arguing discussing some of these things with certain people lately, so I decided to write this :P

This is so great! :XD: Cosplay is such a fun and creative art form. If I could go to school everyday in my Sailor Mercury cosplay, I would! :giggle:

Very good commands to follow. I have trouble with command #2 simply because I'm a poor actor but I do try. ^///^

I always get "you're 23 and you're a teacher... but you dress up for fun? REALLY?" >__<

I love how I just saw this in my inbox today from AllArtSupport, and I just finished my new cosplay pictures...thanks! I think I'm good- first time doing an official cosplay, so I was a little iffy on the mechanics, but this clears it all up, and I seem to be good to go!

Thou shalt not be elitist, but if you don't follow these rules, you're doing it wrong? Hm.

How is saying that one should respect cosplay as an art form, put in some effort and not confuse the definition of the term being 'elitist'?

Making commandments about something people want do for fun certainly isn't very inclusive. Yes, cosplay can be art. But it can also be a simple, fun thing to do on the spur of the moment because you're in a mood to be in that character's headspace or look like them, or for any number of reasons. Your "commandments" do not account for this possibility.

I mean, if this were something like "suggestions for getting the most out of your cosplay experience" I would be behind it all the way. But if you phrase them like demands, then you risk excluding those who don't measure up to your standards, and that seems pretty elitist to me.

I would personally consider your example as 'dressing up'.

Also, for the record: this dev is categorised under 'humor' - it isn't supposed to be taken seriously.

My apologies--I did miss the categorization, and that makes a significant difference. I'm sorry for taking it unnecessarily seriously.

Other than that, our opinion of what constitutes "cosplay" appears to differ, and I doubt debating is going to change either of our minds, so I'll bow out here.

I love to roleplay, but I'm never in character in my costume unless I'm doing the masquerade or having my photo taken. And while you probably don't cosplay lolita fashion, you CAN make a lolita costume the same way you can wear a hippie costume. To me, it's a costume if it's something you wear for a specific occasion that you don't wear normally.

Yeah, I agree. What I'm trying to say is just because someone is dressed in say, an AP dress, does not mean they are in cosplay (unless, as you said: it is a lolita costume). It is very common for alternative fashion trends to be categorised as costumes, when really... it is just fashion :) like, I have a few lolita dresses, and when I wear them, I don't personally see myself as cosplaying. Meh lol.

So good.

In addition to this, going around telling people you're going to rape them or glomping people is generally not in-character, and if it is, you still shouldn't do it because that is totally unacceptable, damaging and frightening. -shudder-

I think it's a bit silly to try to apply rules to cosplay, let alone commandments. It differs from person to person.

I agree with everything, with the exception of #2. Not everyone likes to role-play, and I feel it doesn't need to be a prerequisite to cosplaying. :3 Either way should be fine! Otherwise, love the list!

I'm referring to the 'play' part of cosplay... it's like... doing a photoshoot dressing up as someone dark like Enma Ai and laughing and being all cutesy in all the photos... etc :)
